Description

The MOC3051 consists of an infrared LED optically coupled to a photodiode that drives a triac. When the LED is activated by an input signal, it emits infrared light, which is detected by the photodiode. This triggers the triac, enabling the control of AC loads without a direct electrical connection between the control and load circuits. Unlike some other optocouplers, the MOC3051 does not feature zero-crossing detection, making it suitable for random-phase triggering, which is useful in applications requiring phase-angle control.

Features

  • Random-Phase Triggering: The MOC3051 allows for random-phase triggering, meaning it can trigger the triac at any point in the AC waveform, enabling phase-angle control for applications like dimming and motor speed control.
  • High Isolation Voltage: Provides electrical isolation of up to 7500 Vrms between the input and output sides, ensuring safe operation in high-voltage environments.
  • Low Input Trigger Current: The LED can be driven with relatively low input current, making the IC compatible with low-power control circuits such as microcontrollers.
  • Compact DIP Package: Available in a 6-pin Dual Inline Package (DIP), which is easy to integrate into various circuit designs.
  • High dv/dt Immunity: Designed to handle high rates of voltage change (dv/dt) without false triggering, ensuring reliable operation even in electrically noisy environments.
