Description

The 4N36 optocoupler features an infrared LED that is optically coupled to a silicon phototransistor. When the LED is forward biased by an input current, it emits infrared light, which is then detected by the phototransistor. This allows for the transmission of electrical signals across the isolation barrier without direct electrical connection, thereby protecting the components on the output side from high voltage or noise on the input side.

Features

  • High Electrical Isolation: Provides high electrical isolation between input and output circuits, typically rated up to 5kV RMS, ensuring safety and protection in high-voltage environments.
  • Phototransistor Output: The output is provided by an NPN phototransistor, which can drive logic-level circuits or small loads.
  • Low Input Current Requirement: Operates effectively with low input currents, making it suitable for interfacing with low-power circuits.
  • Standard DIP-8 Package: Available in a standard 8-pin dual in-line package (DIP-8), which is easy to use with breadboards and through-hole PCBs.
  • Wide Operating Temperature Range: Can operate in a broad temperature range, making it reliable for use in various environmental conditions.

Specifications

  • Input LED Forward Voltage (V_F): Typically 1.2V to 1.4V at a forward current of 10mA.
  • Input LED Forward Current (I_F): Maximum 60mA.
  • Output Collector-Emitter Voltage (V_CEO): Maximum 30V.
  • Output Collector Current (I_C): Maximum 50mA.
  • Collector-Emitter Saturation Voltage (V_CE(sat)): Typically 0.2V at a collector current of 10mA.
  • Current Transfer Ratio (CTR): Typically 100% to 200%, depending on the input current and operating conditions.
  • Isolation Voltage: Typically rated at 5kV RMS.
  • Operating Temperature Range: Typically -55°C to +100°C.

Applications

  • Signal Isolation: Used to isolate high-voltage circuits from low-voltage control circuits, protecting sensitive components from voltage spikes and noise.
  • Switching Power Supplies: Provides isolation between the control and power sections in switching power supplies.
  • Data Communication: Ensures safe and reliable data transmission across isolation barriers in noisy or high-voltage environments.
  • Microcontroller Interfacing: Protects microcontrollers and other low-voltage logic circuits when interfacing with high-voltage components, such as relays, motors, and sensors.
  • Industrial Automation: Used in industrial control systems to isolate and protect sensors, actuators, and other devices from the control electronics.
