Description

The 4N28 optocoupler includes an infrared light-emitting diode (LED) and an NPN silicon phototransistor housed together in a DIP-8 package. When the LED is forward-biased by an input current, it emits infrared light that is detected by the phototransistor, allowing the signal to pass through while maintaining electrical isolation between the input and output sides.

Features

  • Electrical Isolation: Provides high electrical isolation between input and output circuits, typically up to 5kV RMS, ensuring safety and protection for sensitive components.
  • Phototransistor Output: The output is provided by an NPN phototransistor, which can drive small loads or interface with logic-level circuits.
  • Low Input Current: Operates with low input currents, making it suitable for interfacing with low-power circuits.
  • Compact DIP-8 Package: The standard 8-pin dual in-line package (DIP-8) allows easy integration into breadboards and through-hole PCBs.
  • Wide Operating Range: Suitable for a variety of applications due to its flexibility in input and output voltage and current specifications.

Specifications

  • Input LED Forward Voltage (V_F): Typically 1.2V to 1.4V at 10mA forward current.
  • Input LED Forward Current (I_F): Maximum 50mA.
  • Output Collector-Emitter Voltage (V_CEO): Maximum 30V.
  • Output Collector Current (I_C): Maximum 50mA.
  • Collector-Emitter Saturation Voltage (V_CE(sat)): Typically 0.2V at 2mA collector current.
  • Current Transfer Ratio (CTR): Typically 20% to 50% depending on input current and temperature.
  • Isolation Voltage: Typically rated at 5kV RMS.
  • Operating Temperature Range: Typically -55°C to +100°C.

Applications

  • Signal Isolation: Used to isolate different parts of a circuit to prevent high voltage or noise from affecting sensitive components.
  • Switching Power Supplies: Provides isolation between the control circuitry and the power section in power supplies.
  • Data Communication: Ensures safe data transmission in noisy or high-voltage environments.
  • Microcontroller Interfacing: Protects microcontrollers when interfacing with high-voltage components, such as relays or motors.
  • Industrial Automation: Used in industrial control systems for isolating sensors, actuators, and other field devices from the control electronics.
